How can Ultrasound differentiate between a ganglion cyst and a bursa?

Ganglion cysts associated with a tendon sheath (or joint) may appear unilocular or multilocular with multiple internal septations, and this appearance is not uncommon about the ankle, foot, wrist, and hand tendons.

This unilocular appearance of a ganglion cyst may be differentiated from a bursa by dynamic compression with the transducer.

Ganglion cysts are normally not compressible, and they should not arise at the expected location of a bursa. Bursae are easily compressible.
