What is the etiology of pseudomembranous colitis?
Pseudomembranous colitis results from toxins produced by an overgrowth of the bacteria Clostridium difficile resulting in watery diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. This diagnosis is most commonly seen as a complication of antibiotic therapy but has also been associated with hypotensive episodes, chemotherapeutic agents, and abdominal surgery.
