What is the difference between an external hernia and an internal hernia?
An external hernia involves passage of visceral tissue through a defect in the body wall and is common. An internal hernia involves passage of visceral tissue through a defect in the peritoneum, omentum, mesentery, or mesocolon within the confines of the body wall and is rare.
