What is pneumonia, and what are some of its associated complications?

Pneumonia is an infection of the lung, which can be of a bacterial, viral, fungal, mycobacterial, or parasitic etiology.

Thoracic complications of pneumonia may include parapneumonic pleural effusion, lung abscess, bronchopleural fistula, empyema, and mediastinal abscess. Some infections can also invade the chest wall and lead to soft tissue abscess formation and osteomyelitis.
