What is Spirapril
NOTE: Not currently available in the US.
Spirapril is an oral angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor. It is a carboxyl-containing ACE inhibitor, similar to ramipril and benazepril. Spirapril is a prodrug which is rapidly absorbed and hydrolyzed to an active diacid, spiraprilat.
Spiraprilat has a short plasma half-life, but a prolonged duration of ACE inhibition and clinical activity, allowing once daily administration.
At this time, spirapril is approved only for use in hypertension; however, because its mechanism of action differs little from other currently approved ACE inhibitors, it is likely to be approved for other conditions in the future. Spirapril was approved December 29, 1994, however Sandoz is not currently marketing this agent in the United States.
