What is Ritodrine
This drug is discontinued in the US.
Ritodrine hydrochloride is a beta-sympathomimetic amine.
It is used to prolong gestation in patients with premature regular uterine contractions, occurring between weeks 20 – 36 of pregnancy.
Ritodrine is very similar to terbutaline in mechanism of action, but ritodrine is the only beta2-agonist approved for treating premature labor. Safe use in advanced labor has not been established.
Use of ritodrine is most successful when the amniotic membrane is intact.
Ritodrine was approved by the FDA in 1980.
Mechanism of Action
Ritodrine has a preferential effect on beta-receptors and little effect on alpha-adrenergic receptors.
Animal studies have demonstrated a preferential stimulatory effect of ritodrine on beta2-adrenergic receptors, resulting in the inhibition of smooth muscle contraction, including smooth muscle in the uterus.
Beta 1 receptors also may be stimulated by ritodrine.
