Mepenzolate

Mepenzolate Brand Name– Cantil

What is Mepenzolate

Mepenzolate is an oral, quaternary anticholinergic gastrointestinal agent. Historically, mepenzolate and other similar anticholinergics were often used, along with antacids, to decrease gastric acid secretion in patients with peptic ulcer disease.

More effective agents are currently available (H2-antagonists, proton-pump inhibitors) to manage peptic ulcer disease, including the use of antimicrobials and gastric acid suppression to eradicate Helicobacter pylori.

Although mepenzolate is FDA-approved as adjunctive therapy in the management of peptic ulcer disease, its efficacy in healing peptic ulcers, decreasing recurrence rate, or preventing complications has never been demonstrated.

Currently, mepenzolate has limited use in the treatment of peptic ulcer disease.

This drug was approved by the FDA in 1956.
