Green Tea

What is Green Tea

Green tea has many purported health benefits.

Tea is one of the most commonly consumed beverages in the world, second only to water; worldwide consumption of tea per capita is estimated to be 120 mL/day.

Green, black and oolong tea are manufactured from the plant Camellia sinensis. The manufacturing processes of the tea varieties differs; green tea is usually steamed or pan-fired from freshly harvested leaves to prevent oxidation and preserve tea polyphenols.

Oolong tea is partially oxidized and black tea is fully oxidized and therefore these tea varieties contain less polyphenols.

Manufacturers of the same tea variety may use slightly different methods that may affect the amount of polyphenols available in a particular brand or batch of tea.

Historically, black tea accounts for approximately 80% of tea consumed worldwide, oolong tea accounts for approximately 1% of tea consumed, and green tea approximately 20% of tea consumed. Historically, green tea has been consumed primarily in China, Japan, North Africa, and the Middle East.

Unfortunately, very few large, randomized prospective, clinical trials are available; however, large epidemiologic studies are available and are the basis for many of the proposed health effects of green tea.

Animal studies indicate green tea inhibits atherosclerosis and has antioxidant, fibrinolytic, antiplatelet, anti-inflammatory, antihyperlipidemic, anticarcinogenic, and antimicrobial properties.

In animals, anticarcinogenic actions have been demonstrated in the colon, duodenum, esophagus, forestomach, large intestine, liver, lung, mammary glands, and skin.
