What is Dyphylline Guaifenesin

Dyphylline and guaifenesin were used together and the combination was claimed to be effective in the treatment of pulmonary conditions.

Dyphylline is an oral xanthine derivative that causes bronchodilation. Guaifenesin loosens and thins sputum and bronchial secretions to ease expectoration.

Although this action can decrease secretions, indirectly diminishing the tendency to cough, guaifenesin is not considered an antitussive agent.

Dyphylline and guaifenesin combination products were marketed to treat bronchial asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, pneumonitis, and other related bronchopulmonary insufficiency conditions in adults and children 6 years of age and older.

Dyphylline guaifenesin was initially marketed for use before 1962, which is when Congress passed the amended Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act requiring that the FDA establish both safety and efficacy for all subsequently approved drugs.

Dyphylline guaifenesin products are unapproved marketed drugs that were never formally evaluated by the FDA.

There are no dyphylline guaifenesin products still marketed in the U.S.
