Defibrotide Brand Name– Defitelio
What is Defibrotide
Defibrotide is indicated for the treatment of hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD), also called sinusoidal obstructive syndrome (SOS), with renal or pulmonary dysfunction following hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) in adult and pediatric patients. Untreated hepatic VOD/SOS with multi-organ failure is associated with more than 80% mortality.
Defibrotide has been shown to improve survival in patients with established VOD/SOS with multi-organ failure at day +100 after HSCT. Because of increased risk of bleeding, defibrotide is contraindicated with concomitant, systemic antithrombotic or antifibrinolytic therapies.
Defibrotide was FDA-approved in March 2016.
