Dalbavancin

Dalbavancin Brand Name– DALVANCE

What is Dalbavancin

Dalbavancin is a second-generation glycopeptide antibiotic approved for the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) caused by certain susceptible bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant strains) and Streptococcus pyogenes.

Glycopeptides inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis by blocking the transglycosylation step of peptidoglycan biosynthesis by interfering with substrate utilization.

They interact with dipeptidyl residues of peptidoglycan precursors.

Two clinical trials demonstrated that dalbavancin was as effective as vancomycin for the treatment of ABSSSI.

Due to an extended half-life, dalbavancin is dosed as weekly intervals.

Unlike vancomycin, dosing is not guided by routine serum concentration measurement.

The most common adverse effects observed in clinical trials were nausea, headache, and diarrhea.

Dalbavancin was FDA-approved in May 2014.
