What is Carbinoxamine Phenylephrine

Carbinoxamine and phenylephrine are used together for the symptomatic relief of upper respiratory symptoms such as nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, and sneezing associated with allergic rhinitis or the common cold.

Carbinoxamine is a first generation H1-antagonist of the ethanolamine class commonly used for treating symptoms related to histamine release such as rhinorrhea and sneezing. In general, antihistamines from the ethanolamine class produce more sedation and exhibit greater anticholinergic activity than antihistamines from other classes.

Phenylephrine is a sympathomimetic amine used as a decongestant to decrease nasal and sinus congestion.

Phenylephrine appears to have a lower propensity to cause hypertension and potential sequelae (e.g., stroke, hypertensive crisis, intracranial bleeding) than ephedrine or phenylpropanolamine.

Carbinoxamine phenylephrine is available in extended-release tablets (e.g., Norel® LA), and pediatric oral liquid preparations (e.g., HistamaxD® drops, XiraHist™ pediatric drops).
