Aminolevulinic Acid

Aminolevulinic Acid Brand Names- Ameluz | Gleolan | Levulan Kerastick

What is Aminolevulinic Acid

Aminolevulinic acid is an endogenous 5-carbon aminoketone and a precursor to the photosensitizing compound, protoporphyrin IX (PpIX). PpIX is a potent photosensitizer that produces a high fluorescent yield.

Aminolevulinic acid is commercially available as oral and topical formulations. The oral formulation is approved for use during surgery in patients with glioma (suspected World Health Organization Grades III or IV on preoperative imaging) as an adjunct for visualization of malignant tissue.

The topical formulations (i.e., 20% topical solution and 10% topical gel) are indicated for use with either a BLU-U (blue light illuminator) or BF-RhodoLED (red light illuminator) photodynamic therapy lamp, respectively, to treat minimally to moderately severe actinic keratosis of the face and scalp.

The 20% topical solution and blue light illuminator is also approved to treat actinic keratosis of the upper extremities.
