Most effective treatment of Major Depressive Disorder
What is the most effective treatment of MDD? What are the treatment options?
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is by far the most effective treatment of MDD, especially MDD with psychotic features.
Other interventions include lifestyle modifications (e.g., improved sleep hygiene, diet, and exercise), psychotherapy (e.g., CBT), and pharmacotherapy (e.g., SSRIs), and combinations of these interventions are more effective than any of them alone.
Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, deep brain stimulation (of the anterior cingulate gyrus), and vagal nerve stimulation are other options that may be effective.
