Which factors predict the development of epilepsy after head trauma

Among all patients with head trauma who seek medical attention, about 2% develop posttraumatic seizures.

The risk is 12% for those with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and up to 50% with penetrating injuries.

Factors that predispose to the development of epilepsy after head trauma include a seizure within 2 weeks of injury, depressed skull fracture, loss of consciousness for longer than 24 hours, cerebral contusion, cortical subdural or subarachnoid hemorrhage, and age of injury older than 65 years.
