When should we consider repeating herpes simplex polymer chain reaction (PCR) in suspected encephalitis? 

In patients with encephalitis who have a negative initial herpes simplex PCR result, consider repeating the test 3 to 7 days later in those with either a compatible clinical syndrome or temporal lobe localization on neuroimaging.
