When is anemia likely to occur in the person with progressive kidney disease?

Anemia is a common feature in patients with advanced CKD.

It becomes increasingly common as the eGFR declines to less than 60 mL/min per 1.73 m 2 .

In a study of more than 15,000 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the prevalence of anemia (hemoglobin <12 g/dL in men and <11 g/dL in women) increased from 1% at an eGFR of 60 mL/min per 1.73 m 2 to 9% at an eGFR of 30 mL/min per 1.73 m 2 and to 33% in males and 67% in females at an eGFR of 15 mL/min per 1.73 m 2 .
