What are the mechanisms by which anemia develops in the patient with progressive kidney disease?
The mechanism for anemia is multifactorial in the person with CKD. An important contributor is decreased endogenous erythropoietin production related to decreased nephron mass; however, also contributing to anemia are factors including iron deficiency, both absolute and functional.
