What is wrong with the term cecal volvulus?
The ascending colon is fused to the retroperitoneum in most people. In patients in whom the right colon has incompletely fused to the retroperitoneum, the ascending colon can twist on its mesentery and become obstructed. The colon proximal to the twist, in particular the cecum, becomes dilated and is located in the mid-left abdomen or in the left upper quadrant. This condition is poorly termed a cecal volvulus, when, in reality, it is a volvulus of the mesentery of the ascending colon
