Weight reduction strategies in advanced CKD

What is known about weight reduction strategies in advanced CKD?

Weight reduction strategies bring up even more complex questions in patients with non–dialysis-dependent CKD.

Some, but not all, observational studies in this patient population have also indicated a salutary association between higher BMI and lower mortality, but at the same time obesity has also been linked to more severe loss of kidney function, and restriction of dietary protein intake may be beneficial in retarding progressive loss of kidney function.

Due to such complex interplays, weight loss–based interventions could in fact have benefits on kidney function in these patients, but any attempt to induce weight loss through limiting nutrient intake in patients with non–dialysis-dependent CKD has to be coordinated by trained personnel to ensure no deleterious effects on broader nutritional status and consequently on survival.
