What types of autoimmune disorders are associated with primary hypophysitis?
- Autoimmune diseases are associated with primary hypophysitis in approximately 20% to 25% of cases.
- Based on a large series of patients with primary hypophysitis (n = 376), the most commonly associated autoimmune diseases included: Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (7.4%), autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 2 (1.8%), Graves’ disease (1.6%), systemic lupus erythematosus (1.3%), Sjogren’s syndrome (0.8%), type 1 diabetes mellitus (0.8%), sarcoidosis (0.5%), pernicious anemia (0.5%), and Addison’s disease (0.5%).
- As such, upon diagnosis of hypophysitis, patients with signs and symptoms of these autoimmune diseases should be screened and treated accordingly.
