Tunnel infection
A tunnel infection is defined by involvement of the catheter tunnel beyond the superficial cuff.
The presence of catheter tunnel infection can occur in the setting of an exit site infection.
This is suggested by erythema, edema, and tenderness over the subcutaneous course of the PD catheter.
A fluid collection demonstrated by ultrasound can facilitate diagnosis (and adequate duration of treatment) of a tunnel infection.
