  1. Caused by violent contraction of quadriceps or forceful flexion of knee when quadriceps is contracted
  2. Differentiated by:
    • Pain onset is sudden
    • Patient is unable to actively extend knee
    • Knee effusion more likely to be present
    • Tibial tubercle fragmentation is seen radiographically; may be difficult to differentiate from calcific fragments found in Osgood-Schlatter disease
      • Comparison views of unaffected knee may be helpful
