Should those with Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis be on a special diet?
Low-protein diets may reduce proteinuria and slow the progression of proteinuric kidney disease.
This was studied and failed in multiple, large, randomized controlled trials.
If this is going to be attempted, special concern should be given to children, especially if they have profound proteinuria, to avoid protein malnutrition.
All patients should be on low-salt diets to help with hypertension and edema and maximize the effectiveness of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEi) and angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB).
