Is there a role for statin therapy in preventing contrast nephropathy?
Statins have been shown to possess pleiotropic effects including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Because reactive oxygen species are involved in the pathogenesis of Contrast induced nephropathy, the administration of statins has been proposed to reduce the risk for Contrast induced nephropathy.
However, several meta-analyses have not found a statistical reduction in Contrast induced nephropathy with statins.
While there is no indication to add a statin prior to contrast, patients currently taking them should continue to receive them.
