What is the role of FDG PET in radiotherapy pretreatment planning?
FDG PET plays an important role in radiotherapy pretreatment planning of cancer patients. It provides improved delineation of sites of malignancy, leading to treatment volume changes in up to 100% of patients and dose sparing of uninvolved tissues. In addition, FDG PET improves disease staging, improving selection of patients for definitive radiotherapy and often leading to a change in radiotherapy treatment intent from curative to palliative or vice versa.
