What is the prognosis for malignant pleural mesothelioma?
Prognosis is generally poor, with a median survival of 8 to 18 months because the tumor is generally progressive. Favorable prognostic factors include limited extent of disease and an epithelioid histologic subtype. Unfavorable prognostic factors include sarcomatoid or mixed histologic subtypes; more advanced stages of disease, such as with intrathoracic lymphadenopathy; extensive pleural involvement; distant metastatic disease; and older age.
