What is primary peritoneal carcinoma (PPC), and how can one distinguish this from peritoneal spread of ovarian cancer on CT and MR imaging?
PPC is an uncommon malignancy that arises from the peritoneum, occurs in up to 7% of patients with suspected epithelial ovarian cancer, and predominantly affects postmenopausal women. Although the CT and MR imaging features of peritoneal involvement are identical to those that may be encountered with peritoneal spread of other cancers including ovarian cancer, PPC is more likely than ovarian cancer when no ovarian mass or enlargement is visualized.
