What is polysplenia?
Polysplenia is defined as presence of multiple small spleens in place of a single spleen. This is associated with bilateral left-sidedness in patients with organ heterotaxy, the abnormal arrangement of organs and vessels in the body. Polysplenia is associated with cardiac septal defects (acyanotic), interruption of the inferior vena cava with azygos continuation, bilateral bilobed lungs, bilateral hyparterial bronchi (with mainstem bronchi inferior to pulmonary arteries), a midline liver, and a hypoplastic pancreatic body and tail.
