New onset diabetes after transplantation

What is NODAT?

NODAT is an acronym for new onset diabetes after transplantation. The prevalence of NODAT is anywhere from 15% to 30%, with the majority of cases occurring shortly after transplant. The major risk factors are divided into nonmodifiable (age, male sex, genetics, polycystic kidney, race, previous glucose intolerance) and modifiable (obesity, sedentary lifestyle, metabolic syndrome, immunosuppression with steroids, CNIs, and sirolimus). Oral agents are typically used to manage NODAT. The patient should also be advised on a healthier lifestyle. Goal of therapy is a hemoglobin (HbA1c) less than 7%.
