Multiple myeloma is the most common primary malignant bone tumor in adults, usually occurring in patients older than 40 years of age. Multiple myeloma represents approximately 1% of all malignant diseases and about 10% to 15% of hematologic malignancies. The excessive proliferation of abnormal plasma cells can result in the formation of a single lesion (plasmacytoma) or multiple lesions (multiple myeloma).
