Medications to reduce suicide risk
What two psychotropic medications have the best evidence to support their role in reducing suicide risk?
Lithium (in patients with bipolar disorder) and clozapine (in patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder) have been shown to significantly reduce the risk of suicide and, despite their reputations for adverse effects, actually result in prolonged survival.
Clozapine even has a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indication for reducing suicide risk in patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.
