Major histologic types and subtypes of lung cancer

What are the major histologic types and subtypes of lung cancer?

Histologically, 75% are non–small cell lung cancers (NSCLC), for which the prognosis primarily depends on surgical stage at diagnosis, and 25% are small cell lung cancers (SCLC), which behave aggressively with early and wide dissemination. NSCLC may be subdivided into adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma subtypes, in order of decreasing frequency. AIS and MIA are less aggressive subtypes of adenocarcinoma.
