Is there a link between caustic ingestion and the development of esophageal cancer?
- Yes. A caustic injury to the esophagus, most commonly after lye ingestion, appears to be associated with an increased risk of developing SCC of the esophagus.
- A history of caustic ingestion is present in 1% to 4% of patients with esophageal cancer.
