Is fever a useful sign?
Yes, but it can be misleading. Fever is often present in infectious arthritis, but it may be absent. Fever, however, can also be a feature of acute attacks of gout and pseudogout, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, sarcoidosis, and reactive arthritis. Many clinicians have been fooled by a gout attack masquerading as cellulitis or a septic joint.
