What is Spurlings sign?
Named after the neurosurgeon who popularized the posterior approach for cervical disc surgery, this maneuver is the cervical equivalent to the lumbar straight leg raise.
Reproduction of the patient’s pain occurs when the examiner exerts downward pressure on the vertex of the head while tilting the head (and occasionally extending it a little) toward the symptomatic side.
This causes narrowing of the intervertebral foramen, which is painful.
