What are indications for starting preventive medications in migraine?
The following factors may indicate the need for preventive medication treatment:
- recurring migraines that in the patient’s opinion significantly interfere with daily routine despite acute treatment
- contraindication to or failure or overuse of acute therapies
- adverse events with acute therapies
- and patient preference
- In addition to medication, triggers are avoided as much as possible, and adequate and regular sleep, avoiding missed meals, and regular exercise may be beneficial.
