Indications for enteroclysis

What are indications for either SBFT or enteroclysis?

  • In the past, SBFT and enteroclysis (also known as small bowel enema because it involves injection of contrast medium directly into the small bowel) have been employed in the evaluation of seemingly any type pathologic condition of the small bowel, including inflammatory bowel disease, neoplasm, and obstruction.
  • With the technologic advances of both CT and magnetic resonance imaging, however, the current roles of SBFT and enteroclysis have significantly diminished.
  • Crohn’s disease represents one of the few remaining indications for SBFT or enteroclysis.
  • Today, neither examination plays a role in cases of suspected bowel obstruction or GI bleeding as they have been supplanted by other imaging modalities.
