Imaging features of acute mediastinitis

Imaging features may include mediastinal widening; pneumomediastinum; infiltration of the mediastinal fat due to edema, inflammation, or infection; mediastinal fluid; or a mediastinal abscess. Associated findings of esophageal rupture, infection in adjacent tissues, or recent thoracic surgery may also be seen.
