How should renal artery stenosis caused by fibromuscular dysplasia be managed?
In contrast to atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis, revascularization of fibromuscular dysplasia generally leads to favorable clinical outcomes and should be considered in many cases. Although there are no randomized trials exclusively involving patients with fibromuscular dysplasia, several case series and a large meta-analysis with these patients have shown that hypertension was improved or even cured in a significant proportion of patients who underwent percutaneous revascularization.
