How much sleep is required for optimal daytime function
Most adult individuals require about 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night, but there is a great deal of individual variability.
As a general rule, if daytime performance is significantly impaired by excessive sleepiness, and this condition persists despite adherence to a regularly scheduled nocturnal sleep period of at least 8 hours, more definitive diagnostic tests are indicated.
A significant change in sleep requirements may indicate an underlying sleep disorder.
