How much pressure needs to be applied when palpating a joint for synovitis?
A good “rule of thumb” is to palpate with enough pressure to blanche your distal thumbnail (4 kg/cm 2 ). This standardizes the joint exam and ensures that adequate pressure is being applied to detect synovitis.
Obviously, with overtly inflamed joints, this degree of pressure may be excessive.
