How does serotonin syndrome develop?
Serotonin syndrome symptoms can emerge in the setting of serotonergic medication overdose, use of two or more serotonergic agents (e.g., selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors [SSRIs] with monoamine reuptake inhibitors, tramadol, or other agents that alter serotonin synthesis, release, catabolism, or reuptake), or when tumors (e.g., carcinoid, small-cell carcinoma) secrete serotonin-like substances.
What features differentiate SS from catatonia?
Serotonin syndrome shares some features with catatonia but gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms (diarrhea), tremor, myoclonus, ocular clonus, and hyperreflexia set it apart.
