How common is chikungunya
Chikungunya is transmitted by Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Before 2013, CHIK outbreaks had been identified only in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
In late 2013, the first local transmission of CHIK was identified in the Western hemisphere (Caribbean countries, with subsequent reports in Central and South America and in the United States in Puerto Rico, Florida, and Texas).
