The prevalence of simple cysts increases with age. Presence of at least one or more simple cysts is found in approximately 11.5% of those aged 50 to 70 years.

The prevalence appears to double to 22.1% in those older than age 70 years and has been reported as high as 36.1% in those older than age 80 years, with a 2:1 frequency in men compared to women.
