HIV Associated Rheumatic Syndromes
1. Screen for a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in any patient with reactive arthritis (ReA), psoriatic arthritis, or psoriasis that is unresponsive to conventional therapy.
2. Bone and joint infections from bacteria do not occur any more frequently in HIV-infected individuals compared with other patients.
3. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has resulted in an increased prevalence of osteonecrosis and immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) in HIV-infected patients, whereas diffuse infiltrative lymphocytosis syndrome (DILS), spondyloarthropathies (SpAs), and the painful articular syndrome occur less commonly. Chronic musculoskeletal disorders will increase with the normalized life expectancy in HIV patients.
