What is Hepatomegaly
Hepatomegaly is when the liver is larger than normal or is enlarged. Some health problems can cause the liver to get bigger. Some people have an enlarged liver, but they do not know it.
Follow these instructions at home:
What you need to do at home depends on what is causing the condition. In general:
- Take over-the-counter and prescription medicines only as told by your doctor.
- Do not take any new medicine unless your doctor says it is okay. This includes over-the-counter medicines, supplements, and herbal remedies. Some of these can hurt your liver.
- Stay at a healthy weight.
- Follow a healthy diet. Eat a lot of:
- Fruit.
- Vegetables.
- Whole grains.
- Do not drink alcohol.
- Do not use any tobacco products, including cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and e-cigarettes. If you need help quitting, ask your doctor.
- Keep all follow-up visits as told by your doctor. This is important.
Contact a doctor if:
- Your belly (abdominal) pain gets worse.
- You cannot stop throwing up (vomiting).
- You have new symptoms.
- Your symptoms get worse.
Get help right away if:
- You throw up bright red blood or blood that looks like coffee grounds.
- You have chest pain.
- You have trouble breathing.
