Does modality of kidney replacement affect outcome in the elderly?
A clear survival advantage in the elderly is not associated with either modality choice of hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.
Some epidemiologic studies, however, suggest a higher mortality for elderly patients, particularly with diabetes, undergoing peritoneal dialysis.
At this time, modality choice in the elderly should be individualized based on the ability to reach adequate clearance and tolerability of the procedure, considering both medical and psychosocial factors for each person.
