Does bariatric surgery lead to kidney stones?
Only the malabsorptive bariatric procedures, roux-en-Y gastric bypass and biliopancreatic diversion, have been linked to an increased risk of kidney stones.
The purely restrictive procedures such as gastric banding are not associated with stones.
Stone risk from the malabsorptive procedures is mainly a result of hyperoxaluria.
The hyperoxaluria can be severe, not only causing stone formation but at times loss of kidney function from oxalate nephropathy.
