What is the difference between nephrolithiasis and nephrocalcinosis?
Nephrolithiasis is the presence of calculi (i.e., stones) in the kidneys, which can pass into the renal pelvis, ureter, or bladder. Patients may present acutely with flank pain or with complications related to obstruction of the collecting system or ureter.
Nephrocalcinosis is the deposition of calcification within the renal parenchyma, either within the renal cortex or within the renal medullary pyramids.
